Victory in Rio Tinto Lockout!

The Los Angeles labor movement celebrated the announcement today of a tentative settlement in the lockout of workers that has ravaged the small mining town of Boron, CA.

“From the day these workers were locked out by this giant foreign corporation, we told them that we -- the LA labor movement – would be their family and that families take care of each other,” said Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.

From the moment the lockout began, the LA labor movement sprang into action.  In February, an emergency car and truck caravan took more than $30,000 worth of food to the locked out families. In April, we held a massive picket line at the British Consulate.  And this coming weekend, a volunteer group of union physicians, nurses and other health care professionals was set to conduct a free clinic in Boron.

The entire labor movement -- from the Docks to the Desert -- had a hand in this victory.
