Act Now: Stop Alcohol Sales Through Self-Checkouts
UFCWOur brothers and sisters at UFCW need your help to pass legislation that will stop the sale of alcohol through self-checkout stands at grocery stores.

Please support Assembly Bill 1060 (De La Torre) which would require all alcohol sales to be made through a face-to-face transaction with a cashier.

California law already requires that tobacco, spray paint and some cold medicines be sold through a face-to-face transaction, but alcohol can be purchased through “virtual vending machines.”

That’s why we need to pass AB 1060. It will be up for a final vote any day now in the California State Senate -- and we need your help to get it passed.

Join the UFCW, MADD, California’s police officers and firefighters by contacting your State Senator today. Click here to send them an email, and urge them to vote YES on AB 1060!

LA Carwash Workers Win Major Victory to End Worker Abuse, Gain Justice on the Job
Judge orders year in jail for carwash owners

CLEAN Press Conference

Carwash workers, and community and union members of the Community-Labor-Environmental Action Network (CLEAN), rallied at Vermont Hand Wash in support of carwash workers who have been fighting for a voice on the job for more than two and a half years.  The event celebrated the car wash workers’ victory against corporate abuse: the announcement by the City Attorney that two of Los Angeles’ worst  carwash owners –brothers Benny and Nissan Pirian-- have each been sentenced to one year in jail.  READ MORE >>

LIUNA Rejoins the National AFL-CIO
Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard L. Trumka
On LIUNA Reaffiliation with the AFL-CIO
August 16, 2010

We are very happy that LIUNA is rejoining the AFL-CIO at a critical moment for working people. Union members, like all working families, have been hard hit by a brutal economy and decades of policies that have undermined the middle class.  More than ever, now is the moment for a unified labor movement. And as we rebuild and strengthen the labor movement, we will work together to create good jobs, restore a middle-class economy, and elect leaders who stand with working people. Together, brick by brick, we will build an economy that works for everyone.

LIUNA brings a proud history and dedication to the union movement and we are delighted to welcome them back to the AFL-CIO. I want to personally recognize the president of LIUNA, Terry O’Sullivan, for his leadership and commitment to working people.

Thousands Rally in Los Angeles for Jobs, Candidates Who Will Create Jobs

More than 6,000 union members and allies rallied in Los Angeles Friday for a massive jobs action  to tell California candidates for public office that the state needs leaders who can create and save jobs, not corporate-backed millionaires like gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman and Senate candidate Carly Fiorina.
